Located in the center of our brains, between the two hemispheres, at the level of the eyebrow, there is a small endocrine gland in the shape of a reddish-gray color, the size of a grain of rice, with an approximate mass of 500g and measuring an average of 25 by 12 mm in humans. This gland called the Pineal Gland, although small and somewhat hidden, was and still is a kind of enigma, since there are controversies regarding its real function, both physical and spiritual. Named by Rene Descartes as the seat of the soul and related to the Third Eye Chakra by Madame Blavastki in Theosophy, it has long been considered a vestigial organ (atrophied structure, with no evident function in the organism). Nowadays, however, it is known that it has important functions in both humans and animals. In this text we will explore what is known and what is believed in relation to this gland and how to take full advantage of it in our daily lives.

The Pineal Gland

As mentioned above, this small gland is in the center of our brains, between the two hemispheres, close to the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. It is called pineal gland due to its pinecone shape. It is also known as Epiphysis, a word derived from the Greek language. "Epi" means "above", "over", in a superior way. "Phise" comes from the Greek word "Physis", which means "nature". In this way, "Epi" + "Phise" = Epiphysis - a gland that is in a superior degree in terms of natural quality.

This gland was one of the last brain organs to be discovered and has been the topic of much mythology and speculation. It is present not only in humans, but as well in almost all vertebrate species, and has an essential role in how we sleep, present ourselves, make decisions and perceive reality. A healthy functioning pineal gland is also essential for psychological development, high performance, and spiritual awakening.

Regarding its structural formation, it mainly contains two types of cells: pinealocytes, which produce melatonin and neuroglia or glial cells, which provide support and protection to neurons.

What the Pineal Gland does

This gland has several functions. We will see some of them:

1. Melatonin secretion and regulation of circadian rhythm

What is the Circadian Rhythm?

The Circadian Rhythm is the daily rhythm of the body over a period of about 24 hours, including signs that cause us to feel tired, to want to sleep, to wake up and to keep us alert normally in the same period over the days, being mainly influenced by the variation of light, temperature, tides, and winds between day and night.

What does the Pineal Gland have to do with it?

The pineal acts as the light meter in the body. It receives light information from the eyes and then sends hormonal messages to the body. It conveys information about the duration of daylight and secretes melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate circadian rhythms. Melatonin, in turn, is produced according to the amount of light a person is exposed to. This production is stimulated by darkness and inhibited by light, which points to the role of this hormone in sleep.

Thus, this gland tells all parts of your body whether it is light or dark, what season we are in, and whether the days are getting longer or shorter. As we live surrounded by clocks and lights this function may go unnoticed today.

However, for animals it is extremely necessary. Jacob Liberman, in “Light: Medicine of the Future”, explains that the size of the pineal gland in animals varies according to their physical location on Earth. Animals that live closer to the Equator have smaller pineal glands than those that live farther north or south. Thus, the more the animal needs to adapt to a changing environment, the larger its pineal gland will be.

2. Puberty e Sexual Maturation

In 1898, a German doctor, Otto Huebner, discovered that a 4-year-old boy who was suffering from premature sexual maturity had a tumor inside or near his pineal gland. Many similar cases have been discovered since then. In reviewing them, scientists concluded that tumors so close to the pineal can impair their function and cause early puberty, while the rare tumors in which the pineal tissues are abnormally active appear to delay early adolescence.

What is currently believed about the role of the pineal gland in sexual maturation was discovered in 1958 by scientists at Yale University, guided by Dr. Aaron B. Lerner.

Researchers at the “University Children’s Clinic in Vienna” discovered the kind of relationship that many were looking for. By testing the blood melatonin levels of 89 children, adults and young adults at night and during the day, the research team revealed a rich detail that connects the Pineal to the development of puberty. The blood samples collected in Austria were taken to MIT in the United States for analysis. The new analysis showed that there was little production of melatonin during the hours of the day and that this small amount does not vary significantly with age. The samples taken at night, however, revealed a very different image.

Children under the age of 7 years produced large amounts of melatonin at night. Older children produced less of the hormone and adults even less. In contrast, the hormone luteotropin, produced by the pituitary gland, a known factor in the development of reproductive organs, was scarce in children under the age of 7, but increased in quantity in older children. This evidence strongly suggests, despite not proving, that melatonin acts to restrict sexual maturation in early childhood.

3. Bone Metabolism

Research in mice suggests that changes in Pineal function may affect bone metabolism. Postmenopausal women are significantly more vulnerable to osteoporosis than other groups.

The Pineal's function tends to decrease as we age. The study concludes that oral melatonin supplementation can help strengthen bone mass, which could be used in the future to protect women from postmenopausal osteoporosis.

4. Mental Health

Sleep and mental health are inextricably linked. Sleep deprivation can cause or worsen some mental health conditions. Some mental disorders can also make sleeping more difficult.

Some mental conditions have been connected to light. Seasonal affective disorder, for example, is a form of depression that affects a person's mood and tends to occur when light levels are low. This can happen due to changes in melatonin secretion.

5. Aging

As we age, the pineal tends to release less melatonin. Melatonin is unlikely to be the sole culprit for age-related changes, but reduced levels of this hormone may explain the aging process.

Older adults have a tendency to sleep less and may have trouble falling asleep. Changes in the secretion of melatonin by the Pineal Gland may explain this phenomenon.

6. Sense of Direction

An old study of people with compromised pineal glands found that damage to this gland is associated with declines in the sense of direction, which suggests that it plays a large, unrecognized role in space navigation.

In conclusion, I quote Jacob Liberman again in “Light: Medicine of the Future”:

Today, the pineal is recognized as playing a major role in every aspect of human function. It acts as the “regulator of regulators.” Aside from its documented effects on reproductive function, growth, body temperature, blood pressure, motor activity, sleep, tumor growth, mood, and the immune system, it also seems to be a factor in longevity.”

The Pineal Gland and the Spiritual World

So far we have seen what is known about the Pineal Gland based on research and testing. From now on we will talk about what is believed. This part of knowledge is usually called "pseudoscience" and "parapsychology" and, while it comes from different cultures, some stand out. The pineal gland or its corresponding Third Eye Chakra has been mentioned several times in different cultures and at different times, appearing with an emphasis in Hindu mythology (like a big eye in the middle of the forehead representing enlightenment); in Egyptian mythology like "The Eye of Horus" and "The Eye of Ra"; in Greek studies done by a philosopher and doctor around 210 AD, being considered as a regulator of thought; among others.

As we mentioned in the beginning, Rene Descartes, French philosopher, physicist, and mathematician, considered the Pineal Gland to be the seat of the soul. He said: “My view is that this gland is the principal seat of the soul, and the place in which all our thoughts are formed. The reason I believe this is that I cannot find any part of the brain, except this, which is not double. Since we see only one thing with two eyes, and hear only one voice with two ears, and in short have never more than one thought at a time, it must necessarily be the case that the impressions which enter by the two eyes or by the two ears, and so on, unite with each other in some part of the body before being considered by the soul. Now it is impossible to find any such place in the whole head except this gland; moreover it is situated in the most suitable possible place for this purpose, in the middle of all the concavities; and it is supported and surrounded by the little branches of the carotid arteries which bring the spirits into the brain”

As far as esoteric knowledge is concerned, there are controversies about which chakra is actually connected to the Pineal Gland. Some relate it to the Third Eye, the sixth chakra, or Ajna, while some relate it to the Crown, seventh chakra, or Sahasrara.

1. The Third Eye

The sixth chakra, known as the Third Eye or Ajna, is the chakra of complete awareness. Consciousness in that chakra realizes what is impossible to detect with the senses. When all five other chakras are activated and balanced, the sixth chakra opens, allowing us a clear view of reality. It connects us to higher levels of consciousness in the body and allows us to connect to the world of ideas and thoughts.

While a person's two eyes see the physical world, the Third Eye reveals insights into the present and the future. It connects us to our intuition, gives us the ability to communicate with the world, and helps us to receive messages from the past and the future.

Ajna translates as "authority", "command" or "perception" and is considered as the eye of intuition and intellect. Its associated organ is the brain. When something is seen through our inner eye, as in a dream, that vision occurs through Ajna.

Hindus believe that the spiritual energy of the environment enters the body through this chakra and therefore take great care to protect it with positive and protective spiritual energies.

When your Third Eye is open, your intuition strengthens and the messages you receive are easily interpreted, without getting lost in the thoughts of the mind. The reports related to the opening of this chakra always speak of visions, of a natural knowing. Psychic abilities are awakened, and we come into contact with information and people without the illusory restriction of space and time, since it allows mental communication between people.

2. The Crown

The seventh chakra, known as the Crown or Sahasrara, is the source of soul consciousness in man. Without it we would be just overdeveloped animals. Despite being inactive in most people or only slightly active, most of the time through activities that are not recognized as activities of the seventh chakra, such as intuition, creative imagination and dreams, it affects us externally and internally.

The Crown is the higher mind of man, the higher consciousness that makes man aware of everything in his existence. It only awakens when all the other chakras work correctly and in harmony.

While the Third Eye is depicted as an eye in the center of the forehead, the Crown is depicted as a areola over the head, like that of angels and saints, as it is the seat of the highest vibrational frequency of energy in our bodies.

Results of opening the Third Eye and the Crown

Nikola Tesla said: “My brain is only a receiver, in the Universe there is a core from which we obtain knowledge, strength and inspiration. I have not penetrated into the secrets of this core, but I know that it exists.”

Tesla knew that there was a way to access the secrets of the universe through our brain. He called the brain "receiver", which it really is and becomes even more efficient when our chakras are aligned, activated, and balanced, especially the sixth and seventh chakras.

With our brains functioning as receivers of information from that core that Tesla referred to, we receive information that is decoded in different ways.

My personal perception of these chakras is that the Crown works by connecting us to this core, as part of a network, and the Third Eye is responsible for interpreting the messages that arrive through that network. Comparing them to a computer, our Crown would be the motherboard, where we connect the cables and where all the information goes, for example, and the Third Eye would be the processor, which decodes this information.

With the activation of these chakras, some psychic abilities come forward, which are:

· Clairvoyance

When past, present, and future visions pass through our mind's eye, or the third eye, like a dream. Many of us are highly visual and able to better understand an idea when we see it written or sketched as an image on a computer screen or paper. Visual people generally choose to be artists, builders, photographers, decorators, designers, and so on. If that sounds familiar, your clairvoyance is probably a dominant sense.

· Clairaudience

When we hear words, sounds or music in the voice of our own mind. On rare occasions, spirit can create an audible sound, although it consumes an enormous amount of concentrated energy. Some of us better retain and understand information when we hear it out loud. Our natural talents tend to reside in our hearing faculties, often making us talented musicians, singers, writers and public speakers. If that seems right, clairaudience may be the main sense for you.

· Clairsentience

This involves feeling the emotions of one person or spirit or feeling the physical pain of another person. Many of us are aware, without being aware of it. When we feel a strong "feeling", positive or negative, about someone we just met or when we feel a chill for no apparent reason, we may be tuning in to a person's emotional energy or a spirit around us. When we are highly sensitive and attuned not only to our own feelings, but also to the feelings of others, it makes us natural healers and caregivers. We often feel inspired to pursue careers as doctors, therapists, counselors, babysitters, and teachers. If this is you, clairsentience is at the top of your list of senses.

· Clairalience

This is being able to smell odors that have no physical source whatsoever. Instances of this may include smelling the perfume or cigarette smoke of a deceased relative, used as a sign of his presence around us. When our sense of smell is strong and distinct, we may discover that certain smells connect us to past memories or we may be attracted to work as a florist, wine taster or fragrance creator.

· Clairgustance

That is the ability to taste something that doesn't really exist. Often, this experience comes out of nowhere when we have a memory or feeling related to a particular food or drink. If we have a greater sense of taste, it would make us natural chefs, bakers or food critics.

· Claircognizance

When we are aware of people or events that we would not normally be aware of. Spirit impresses us with truths that just pop into our minds out of nowhere. An example of this would be a premonition: a warning of something that will happen in the future. Recognition of "claircognizance" requires tremendous faith, because there is often no practical explanation as to why we "suddenly" know something. Many philosophers, teachers, doctors, scientists, religious and spiritual leaders and powerful sales and business leaders tend to be highly intuitive and just seem to know the facts with a sense of certainty. If this is you, consider “claircognizance” as one of your dominant senses.

There is a lot of skepticism and religiosity related to these skills. The skeptic does not believe them, even when he feels them. The religious, in turn, believes that only highly developed beings are capable of operating at this level and, therefore, also becomes skeptical.

Psychic abilities are natural parts of our being, but they need dedication to be reached, activated, and integrated.

One of the barriers to achieving psychic abilities is our next topic:

Calcification of the Pineal Gland

Unlike most parts of the brain, the blood-brain barrier does not isolate the pineal from the rest of the body. Instead, the pineal receives an enormous amount of blood flow, second only to the kidneys.

Surrounded and immersed in cerebrospinal fluid, this gland is camping in a small cave-like area behind and above the pituitary gland.

In the 1990s, British scientist Jennifer Luke discovered high concentrations of fluoride in her patients' pineal gland.

Fluoride, commonly found in most municipal waters and in pesticides, accumulates in the pineal more than anywhere else in the body.

This accumulation of fluoride forms phosphate crystals, creating a hard shell around the pineal, called calcification.

Scientific Effects of Pineal Gland Calcification

Studies show that calcification of the pineal gland:

• Reduces melatonin production (source)

• Impairs the sleep-wake cycle (source)

• Disrupts circadian rhythm regulation

Fluoridated water is believed to be one of the main causes of calcification in the pineal gland. Evidence suggests that children reach puberty earlier now, as a consequence of drinking this water.

Fluoride exposure in animal studies decreased melatonin and led to accelerated sexual development in females.

A recent November 2019 study published in “Biological Trace Element Research” found that when they fed male rats on a fluoride-free diet, pineal growth was stimulated.

In Toward a Psychology of Being, Maslow writes:

"Humans no longer have instincts in the animal sense, powerful, unmistakable inner voices which tell them unequivocally what to do, when, where, how and with whom. All that we have left are instinct-remnants. And furthermore, these are weak, subtle and delicate, very easily drowned out by learning, by cultural expectations, by fear, by disapproval, etc.”

Simply put, when our pineal gland is calcified, we are unbalanced with nature, preventing proper biological and brain functioning.

Reasons to Decalcify the Pineal Gland

Obviously, we don't want to:

• Decrease melatonin production,

• Mess up our circadian rhythm,

• Mess with our reproductive function,

• Prevent our Connection to the Occult.

And those are just some of the consequences of a calcified pineal gland.

Sleep is a vital biological function designed to restore us every night. When the pineal gland is calcified, it is believed to affect the quality of our sleep. Poor sleep reduces our mental performance and cognitive functioning, while making us prone to disease.

In many ways, the pineal is our body's connection to the natural world. Sever that connection (via calcification) and what happens?

You have a race of beings mostly disconnected from their instincts, their planet and each other. Without a fully functioning pineal gland, media messages program us more easily, false belief systems shape us, and bad decisions torment us.

Simply put, a calcified pineal gland limits our wonderful potential.

Decalcification of the pineal gland is an important part of our awakening, as it increases our perception of reality.

3 Steps for Pineal Gland Decalcification

To decalcify your pineal gland, we need to do three things:

1: Eliminate certain foods and environmental factors that are causing additional calcification.

Change your toothpaste - choose a brand without fluoride.

Buy a water filter that filters heavy metals and fluoride.

Avoid drinking bottled water and instant teas.

Eat organic foods.

Avoid consuming calcium supplements that contain synthetic calcium.

Avoid processed foods.

2: Remove the existing calcification.

Meditate: Meditation is a powerful way to remove the calcification that already exists in your pineal. You can meditate by focusing the energy on your upper chakras (Third Eye and Crown). The use of Crystals related to these chakras also helps in decalcification.

Sungazing: Another way to decalcify the pineal gland is to watch both sunrise and sunset. The first and last fifteen minutes of sunlight during the day emit a frequency that stimulates the pineal. It is important that you are barefoot and in contact with the ground. As looking at the sun is not that easy, it is recommended that this activity be done progressively, starting at 10-second intervals, until you feel more comfortable and resistant to sunlight in your eyes.

3: Create an external environment that supports the healthy functioning of the pineal gland.

Eliminate artificial lights, especially at night. When sleeping, make sure that there is no light in the room, such as television lights or some other electronic device.

In short, the decalcification of the Pineal Gland not only allows us to connect with ourselves, but also with the universe, bringing back our animal and spiritual instinct. You can bring together, in this process, the more practical side, which involves filters and toothpaste, as well as the most transcendental, which involves meditation practices and awareness of your psychic abilities.

Anyway, the results are noticeable and in a short time you will feel physical benefits, such as improved sleep quality, sense of direction, among others, and also spiritual benefits, such as a better connection with your Inner Self and with people around you.

With sharper intuition and a greater connection with our own bodies, we navigate our 3D reality more consciously and safely, making coherent decisions based on our inner direction.

Get ready to feel a new world and enjoy it! The effort is worth it!

Good luck.
